One of America’s most notorious unsolved cases, dubbed the Villisca Axe Murders, took place in June 1912 in a small Iowa town. Six family members and two houseguests all died from severe head trauma due to an axe. There have been many suspects, a few of which who were tried and exonerated, but never any actual convictions. Which makes both the case and the scene of the crime ripe for haunted tales.  Throughout the years, the house has been home to many paranormal investigations, and you can even pay to stay the night there, if you dare.

So it’s no surprise that one of America’s most haunted locations would make for a perfect film premise.  Judging by the trailer, below, Villisca is home to some very pissed off ghosts.  While horror movies about would-be ghost hunters can feel repetitive, the backstory touched upon in the trailer looks absolutely insane.

Starring Robert Adamson, Jarrett Sleeper, Alex Frnka, Conchata Ferrell, and Jon Gries, IFC Midnight will unleash The Axe Murders of Villisca in theaters and VOD on January 20, 2017.

On a June night in 1912, eight people—a mother, father, their four children, and two guests—were murdered by an axe-wielding killer in the sleepy town of Villisca, Iowa, a case that remains unsolved to this day. 104 years later, Caleb (Robert Adamson) and Denny (Jarrett Sleeper), two friends who share an interest in ghost hunting, along with Jess (Alex Frnka), the new girl in school who’s already got a reputation, sneak into the house where the infamous bloodbath occurred in hopes of recording paranormal activity. What the trio encounters is far more horrifying than anything they could have imagined. A century after the shocking crime that put Villisca on the map, a supernatural force is waiting to write the next chapter in the home’s bloody history.
