For horror fans, Friday the 13th is a sort of holiday reserved for binge watching horror. While there’s certainly a lot to watch this year, I recommend something entirely unique and worthwhile. Last year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX, brought a terrifying introduction to the twisted mind of Guy Shelmerdine and the innovative Dark Corner Studios, a pioneer in horror VR. We explored the three VR experiences offered at the fest and were left with a tease that Dark Corner Studios had big plans on the way. Now, a year later, we finally know what they’ve been working on- and it’s out just in time for Friday the 13th and the Halloween season!

Shelmerdine, and Dark Corner Studios, treat their VR films with high quality innovation and pure terror, and the result is a bold thrill-ride.

The biggest question of how you can experience their work is finally answered; Dark Corner Studios has launched a pioneering horror VR app, released in conjunction with new experience Night Night during New York Film Festival’s ‘Convergence’ that occurred September 29-October 1, 2017. The app is the first dedicated to narrative genre VR content, and features eight immersive experiences both cinematic quality and chill-inducing.

The Dark Corner app, built using Vusr by Secret Location, is available for iOS, Android,Samsung GearVR, Google Daydream, and Oculus Rift, and will feature both free and paid content. Experience offerings will come from both Dark Corner Studios as well as filmmakers bearing Dark Corner’s seal of approval. Meaning carefully curated content of the highest caliber.

There are already numerous experiences available to terrorize viewers on the app, including the experiences from last year’s Fantastic Fest, but one we think you’ll most be excited for is Shelmerdine’s Night Night, which is coming to the app on October 19th. The immersive VR film is not for the faint of heart- especially sufferers of coulrophobia. Stemming from a nightmare Sherlmerdine had as a kid after his uncle dressed as a clown for his fourth birthday and traumatized him instead, Night Night was born from that memory and the string of recurring nightmares that followed.

If this new VR Film is any indication, we don’t blame Shelmerdine at all for those deep-seated fears. This is now my fourth Dark Corner film to explore, having been granted an early preview, and it’s by far the best (and that’s saying quite a lot). Stunning in its vivid visuals, it’s magnetic simply to look at. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, is that you can count on Shelmerdine to take you on a narrative journey that you can’t predict.

The premise for Night Night sounds simple enough, in which a child settling in for bed soon finds himself terrorized in a clown-filled nightmare. Where it goes is unexpectedly thrilling; the very personification of a lucid nightmare. Shelmerdine, and Dark Corner Studios, treat their VR films with high quality innovation and pure terror, and the result is a bold thrill-ride.

Co-written by Guy Shelmerdine and Teal Greyhavens, Night Night stars Abigail Rice, Frantisek Sladek, Dominik Jakoubek, Petr Klimes, and Roman Skoda. The film itself is pure nightmare fuel, but D.P. Filip Marek’s photography makes the viewer unable to look away. Why would you want to anyway? It’s the only film I can recall where the viewer is _____ by a sharp-toothed clown, before entering a new level of clown hell.
