There was a point in time when the Eastern hemisphere was cranking out some of the most powerful genre cinema in the land, but things have cooled in recent years. It almost seems as if the horror genre moves in cycles around the globe. For a while it was France that was setting the world on fire, and Australia has certainly been making a valiant effort in recent years, but perhaps it’s time for our Eastern friends to step into the limelight once again with their often kooky spin on things. At least, I hope it is.

THE MIDNIGHT AFTER, debuting June 21 on DVD/Blu-Ray and digital from Well Go USA Entertainment is said to  seamlessly blend a variety of genres–including mystery, thriller, sci-fi and comedy–into somthing that has been called “Hong Kong Doomsday 101” and an “End of the world satire”. Sounds fun, right? While I’m a bit burned out on ANYTHING apocalyptic , I’m willing to give something a shot if it’s put together in an inventive way–and that’s exactly the vibe I get from Fruit Chan’s THE MIDNIGHT AFTER.
