March 2017

Another King Kong origin story, big whoop, right? Yeah, this is usually the type of film that the very idea of it induces a little eye-rolling. But have you seen the trailer? It’s kind of amazing. And so is the cast. Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, Tom Hiddleston, John C. Reilly, and John Goodman? Yes, please. Even the movie poster is amazing. So, this might be one redo origin story that we actually need to see.

Though this plot revolves around a ghost story that takes place in the fashion world of Paris, early buzz places this one more on the outskirts of horror than firmly planted in the thick of it. Starring Kristen Stewart, this will play out more as an indie arthouse drama, though reviews mention that not only is her performance captivating, but the scary ghost bits are actually scary.

March 10 is a busy day for horror releases, so if you only can see one movie that weekend, make it this one. Julia Ducournau’s feature debut is an exquisite coming of age story that sees a young vegetarian developing a bizarre taste for flesh when forced into a carnivorous hazing ritual at vet school. Yes, this a tale of a young cannibal. It’s razor sharp wit and examination on the relationship between sisters makes this reminiscent of Ginger Snaps, and that’s a great thing. (Review)

Written by James Gunn (Slither) and directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek), that’s all you really need to know to get your butts in the theater seat come March 17. But if you need a little more convincing, then just know that the plot plays like a demented Battle Royale set in a corporate office building. 80 Americans are locked into their high-rise office and must participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed. Stars Tony Goldwyn, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, John C. McGinley, John Gallagher Jr., and more. (Review)

I know, I know. Doug Bradley is not playing Pinhead in this one. Nor is Clive Barker involved. That’s an understandable turnoff for many. But long-time franchise effects artist Gary Tunnicliffe is involved, so we can be assured that this is in the hands of someone who really gets this universe. The plot sees detectives coming together in hunt of a serial killer terrorizing the city, and they get far more than they bargained for. The film stars long-time horror veteran Heather Langenkamp.
