Welcome to Horror and Chill Volume 2!  We hope you enjoyed last week’s selections.  This week, we’ve got another round of movies and booze to help you have a real good weekend.  Pick a movie or two below, grab your drinks, call your boo, and get ready to Horror and Chill!

Shudder

What to watch?

Lake Bodum might have everything you are looking for.  Finnish dialogue?  Check.  Based on a true story?  Check.  A group of friends in the woods trying to have a good time but instead being met with deceit, murder, and mayhem?  Yup, that’s a check.  Lake Bodum is a Finnish-Estonian flick, and also a Shudder exclusive!  You’re going to have to take my word on this one, but let’s just say that I hope you enjoy Horror and Chilling because that camping trip is about to be cancelled.

What to drink?

Koskenkorva Viina, or Kossu, is the national drink of Finland.  You can drink it straight, or mix it with some Coke.  Ok… Ok…I know what you are going to say… where the fuck am I supposed to find Kossu?!  Don’t worry my friends, I’ve got you covered!  Lake Bodum is about a bunch of young people camping out in the woods.  What do young people drink when camping out in the woods?  Natural Light of course!  Bet you’re wishing you could find some Kossu now, aren’t you?  Look on the bright side, you can make your date a nice greasy breakfast (with coffee and vodka, another Finnish favorite) when you both wake up hungover in the morning.  No one is driving home after a night of Natty Light.

Amazon Prime

What to watch?

Bone Tomahawk is horror… or is it a western?… no no… definitely horror.  Whatever you want to call it, Bone Tomahawk is a great flick. You may have heard of this one, or at least watched a clip of its now infamous death scene.  Kurt Russell turns in a fantastic performance and the aforementioned death will bring you and your date close together to kick off the Chill portion of the evening.  Still on the fence? Check out our review, then press play on a damn good movie.

What to drink?

In the old west they drank one thing and one thing only.. whiskey.  You’ll notice that is ‘whiskey’ with an ‘e’ in it.  This ain’t no fancy single malt from the north of an island in the Atlantic!  Nope, this is good ol’ American whiskey.  Pick up a bottle of Old Grand-Dad, grab some shot glasses, and get to drinkin’!  Believe me… once Bone Tomahawk gets going, you’ll need it.

Netflix

What to watch?

We Are Still Here is an awesome, throwback ghost story that will leave you wanting more.  While this is definitely a modern horror, it doesn’t feel like one.  It’s old school with a modern day attitude.  The effects are top notch, the acting is fantastic and the story is fresh.  Oh… did I mention Barbara Crampton is in it?  Our review will tell you everything else you need to know.  If you’re looking to get that PYT you’ve had your eyes on into a fear driven snuggle fest this weekend, definitely watch We Are Still Here!

What to drink?

I decided to go right to the source for this pairing, and so I hit up We Are Still Here director/writer Ted Geoghegan on Twitter.  His response was perfect… “Straight whiskey, just like everyone drinks in the film. :D”.  And so, that is what you’re gonna drink!  Head out to the liquor store and pick up a bottle of J&B Scotch Whisky.  You’re gonna need two glasses…and that is it!  You heard the man, straight whiskey!  Get to drinkin’!

Hulu

What to watch?

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is one of those movies that horror heads show to their non-horror loving friends (ugh… who would have friends like that…) and they end up loving it!  I went a bit heavy on the scares this week, so Tucker and Dale vs. Evil will let you break up some screams with laughter.  Black comedy is at its best here… plus, compared to Tucker and Dale you are bound to look real good to your date!  Put on your trucker hat, turn the lights down low, and snuggle in for some backwoods fun!

What to drink?

I reached out to a hillbilly buddy of mine and he said the only possible drink for this movie is a moonshine Bloody Mary.  Now, this isn’t your new style fancy moonshines with delicious flavors like apple pie and blueberry.  No no… this is rot gut grain alcohol.  Whether you find it for sale in a jug or a jar, that is what you’re going to need.  Then you gotta get yourself some Bloody Mary mix, some celery to chomp on, and, since I’m from Maryland, Old Bay seasoning to top it all off with.  This is a drink that’ll really transport you into the world of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, and of course… it’ll get ya drunk.

Official review for As Above So Below by ModernHorrors.com

What to watch?

As Above, So Below isn’t a new release, but our own Jacob Hopkins is working hard on a new episode of Fright Logic, and I want you to all be prepared.  This is one of those movies that makes you fall in love with found footage again.  The acting is great, the premise is almost believable, and the effects are legit without relying on shady CGI.  There is plenty to keep you on the edge of your seat… or pressed up close to your paramour.  Dig into our review, then pop the disc in (physical media really impresses on a first date), and get ready to be scared!

What to drink?

As Above, So Below takes place in Paris… well… under it… regardless.. the Parisians love their wine.  So what else would you drink with this film?  Grey Goose.  I don’t like wine, so we’re going to go with some French vodka!  Pick out a couple of mixers (variety is the spice of life), and impress your mate as you mix up some silky smooth cocktails.  How much vodka you use is up to you, but I’m always a fan of just counting to five and topping it off with some juice.

That about wraps it up for Volume 2 of Horror and Chill!  Tune in next week for more movies, more booze, more dating advice and of course more fear!  Same MH time, same MH website!
