Preservation
Let’s kick off the list with something somewhat controversial. I can admit that you’ve seen everything Preservation has to offer time and time again, but something about it kept my attention. It’s pretty textbook survival horror stuff, where a “survivor girl” finds unbelievable strength and wit to outsmart her attackers–but even so– It’s worth a watch for those that fear the outdoors. . . like me.

Plot Synopsis: Three family members head deep into the woods for a hunting trip that doubles as a distraction from their troubles at home. When all of their gear is stolen, they turn on each other, but soon realize there are much more treacherous forces at work.

Contracted
There’s little chance that you haven’t watched this one already, but if you’ve been waiting for an excuse–maybe my recommendation will be enough. It’s original, at times funny, and ALWAYS disgusting. Worth a watch for any fan of the often-nauseating Body Horror sub genre.

Plot Synopsis: A young girl contracts what she thinks is a sexually-transmitted disease – but is actually something much worse.

Exeter
Here’s another one that may raise a few eyebrows, but I enjoyed my time with Exeter. It falls somewhere in between teen comedy and possession horror, and that’s not a bad thing in my book. If you can’t make a movie scary. . . then you should at least make it fun. Exeter succeeds in that regard. Grab some friends, beer, and pizza and lose some brain cells. It’s fun–I promise.

Plot Synopsis: During an all-night, drug-fueled party at an abandoned asylum known for the horrific treatment of its patients, a group of ordinary teens decide to experiment with the occult, mysteriously leading to a violent possession. In an effort to find help, the group rushes to escape, only to find themselves locked inside with no means of communication. Tempers flare, trusts are broken and in attempt to save one of their friends possessed by the demon, the amateurs try to perform an exorcism. Instead of solving the problem, and unbeknownst to them, they unleash an even more powerful and vengeful spirit, one with a distinct motive and which wants them all dead. The teen’s only chance of survival is to uncover the asylum’s deep mysteries and find a way out before it’s too late.

heneverdied3
This might be the biggest no-brainer in the list. He Never Died was one of the best films of 2015, and it’ll be on Netflix starting on March 18th. If Dry humor, biblical cannibalism, and Henry Rollins are all things that you’re into; add this one to your queue ASAP.

Plot Synopsis: Jack is a solitary man with a mysterious past. His strange habits will soon become stranger when his past catches up with him.

Canal
Fun fact: The Canal was the first review ever written for ModernHorrors.com! I can understand why you might look this one over. The movie poster isn’t overly engaging, the synopsis could go either way, and it’s not the type of movie that has benefitted from tremendous word of mouth for whatever reason. Do yourself a favor and ignore all of that, because The Canal is an incredibly strong piece of horror. I’d even go so far as to call it scary. If you’ve been skipping this one over; Now is the time.

Plot Synopsis: Film archivist David and his wife are perfectly happy or so he believes. When a looming secret shatters their marriage at the same time as a turn-of-the-century film reel he is studying reveals their house to be the site of a 1902 multiple-murder, David begins to unravel, and the house’s eerie history threatens to repeat itself. Dripping with tension and chilling to the core, this visceral Irish ghost story is a visually arresting and genuinely shocking journey into the darkness within.
