If you’ve been under a rock for the last five years, and somehow missed THE PURGE series of movies, then take moment, go watch all three, and then come back to watch this trailer. Since he onset, the series has had political undertones that were only further explored as the series progressed from a lone home-invasion movie to something more in THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR. The fourth film in the franchise coming later this year is called THE FIRST PURGE, and, unsurprisingly, explores the events that lead to the first Purge event.

Originally, the fourth THE PURGE movie was rumored to be title THE PURGE: THE ISLAND. While the first trailer was nothing more than a faux political ad drumming up support for the first Purge event, the newest trailer gives away some major storylines THE FIRST PURGE will tackle.

It appears in order to show American citizens a Purge event is needed, and will work, a small Purge experiment happens on Staten Island – hence the earlier rumored title. However, it appears that there are nefarious government agents that invade the island in hopes of making sure the Purge is a success, so it can be rolled out across the country. If the last three weren’t political enough for you, THE FIRST PURGE should satiate that need.

James DeMonaco wrote THE FIRST PRUGE. He also wrote and directed the first three films in the series. However, Gerard McMurray takes over directing for THE FIRST PURGE. The movie stars Marisa Tomei, Lex Scott Davis, and Luna Lauren Velez.

THE FIRST PURGE hits theaters July 4. A happy Independence Day indeed.

The film will be a prequel that will focus on the events that lead up to the very first Purge event.
