Slender Man, an internet meme created in 2009 and was the impetus for the brutal stabbing of a 12-year-old girl by her peers, is getting a big-screen adaptation in the aptly titled upcoming movie SLENDER MAN.

For those uninitiated in the darker corners of the internet—or Reddit— one Victor Surge (real name Eric Knudsen) created the Slender Man and its mythos, using original stories and image manipulation to give his creation a lanky, unnatural and unsettling appearance. There’s been a plethora of games, stories and memes ever since.

Now, we’re getting a movie, which is written by David Birke (13 SINS, ELLE) with Surge also receiving a writing credit. The story appears to be a straightforward interpretation of the Slender Man mythos. The creature appears and is then blamed for child disappearances and other haunting occurrences.

There are certainly some frightful images and at least one grisly eye gouging. However, the film is not rated yet, so it could be a PG-13 affair to capture internet-enthralled teens.

SLENDER MAN is directed by Sylvain White (STOMP THE YARD) and stars Joey King (WISH UPON, THE CONJURING) and Javier Botet (THE CONJURING 2, IT). SLENDER MAN is scheduled to hit theaters May 18.

Slender Man tells the story of a tall, thin horrifying figure with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face, who is reputed to be responsible for the haunting and disappearance of countless children and teens.
