Teenage angst seems all the rage, but THE DARK to flip the script – or at least attempt to subvert expectations. Yes, this is a zombie movie, but an intimate one. The trailer, rightfully, doesn’t give much away. It’s just a scene of a girl and a boy walking through the woods. Both have facial disfigurements. One from the zombification the other from abuse.

THE DARK centers around a young girl named Mina – the zombie who haunts the woods surrounding her childhood home – who befriends a physically abused boy. However, instead of devouring on his innards, she must figure out why she doesn’t want to kill and eat him.

This feels like an intimately dark movie that will explore some very unsettling aspects of the human condition and will do so through the zombie genre lens. Just thinking about the parallels and connections of suffering both alive and, well, as a zombie, could make for some great, personal storytelling.

THE DARK is written and directed by Justin P. Lange and stars Nadia Alexander, Toby Nichols, and Karl Markovics. The movie makes its premiere later this month at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Undead and hating it, young flesh-eater Mina haunts the woods surrounding her childhood home. When she befriends a physically abused boy, she must figure out why, for once, she isn’t feeling homicidal.
