2015 was a fantastic year for the box office. We saw installments from The Avengers franchise, Jurassic Park, and friggin’ Star Wars for jeebus’ sake. Group those in with the massive success of former horror kingpin James Wan’s Fast and the Furious 7, and we’re talking about some serious bucks. But those movies were expected to succeed. Things aren’t always as clear cut when it comes to the horror genre.

Last year wasn’t without its fair share of theatrical horror, and they were met with varying levels of success in the press. But how did they fair among moviegoers? The everyday non-hardcore horror fans? Not too shabby, actually. Have a look below, and check out the domestic box office numbers for 2015’s biggest horror titles.

That’s right, M. Night Shyamalan’s THE VISIT was the most popular theatrical horror release of 2015 with earnings of $65,206,000. As interesting as that is – I find it even more interesting that former Box Office-juggernaut PARANORMAL ACTIVITY came in dead last…by a hefty margin earning just $18,300,000. The team at Blumhouse claimed that The Ghost Dimension would be the final chapter in the Paranormal Activity franchise, and with numbers like that, I’m inclined to believe them.

So what were your thoughts on 2015 theatrical horror? What would you like to see more (or less) of? One thing is for certain, I’m sure we all agree that we can do better in 2016… but will we? Time will tell.
