I have gone on record many times stating that I don’t necessarily believe that remakes are a bad thing. Especially when it involves foreign films that could use a push into a wider audience. That said… I didn’t see this one coming. Just a few days removed from our initial thoughts and impressions on the Martyrs remake – we get word from Screen Daily that one of my favorite films of all time is getting an English-language makeover as well – Inside.

For the record – let me state that I stand by my previous statements on remakes. That said, this is a hard one for me to swallow, folks. If the is any silver lining here, it’s that this is not a Hollywood/Blumhouse production. At least, not yet. An extremely capable team comprised of writers/directors/producers from films such as KIDKNAPPED, BURIED, and [REC] are set to lead this one stateside. So yeah – a foreign film being remade into English by a foreign team. Sure – fuck it.

For fans of the original, you probably shouldn’t expect the brutality from the original. The filmmakers are pitching this one as a “tense thriller” and have said: “Jaume had this great idea for the remake and, with Manu, they’ve reimagined the original film as a very classy and tense thriller“. “With two great female characters fighting to be a mother, Miguel Ángel brings his distinct vision, setting up the film as a tense, sustained set piece that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats, for sure“.

This one could go either way, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little confused. I will choose to keep my glass half-full until we learn more. We’ll keep you posted, so stay tuned.
