With nearly a fifteen year gap between seasons, THE X-FILES returned to FOX with its highly successful six-episode tenth season back in January of this year. Today, FOX executives announced that everyone was on board for an eleventh season, but don’t dust-off the old tin foil hats just yet, X-Philes.

Although the announcement today has a very positive tone, FOX Television Group co-chair Gary Newman also mentioned that there were some logistical problems that would have to be fixed before they could start shooting. The difficulty, Newman said, is working with everyone’s schedule.  FOX is hoping to be able to give more information, including a possible premier date announcement, by this time next year.

THE X-FILES season ten success includes a premier that drew in more than fifty million viewers and was the second most popular show in the eighteen to thirty-four demographic next to AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Just before the launch of the new season back in January, Creator Chris Carter said the he was already planning episodes for the eleventh season, but it was up to FOX executives to make the final decision on whether or not we would see THE X-FILES again. In February, FOX’s president of entertainment, David Madden, said the the network would love to do more episodes, and that initial reaction from audiences had been very encouraging.

While it looks like the stars have aligned to warrant another season of THE-XFILES, the best case scenario would be the fall of 2017. But winter 2018 would be a better bet for when we get to see Mulder and Scully investigate the weird and unexplained.

Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder the believer and Dana Scully the skeptic, investigate the strange and unexplained while hidden forces work to impede their efforts.
