I know this may not seem newsworthy to a lot of you, but I bet there’s a certain segment of our readership that will appreciate the following tidbit: Earlier this morning, I was able to confirm that Netflix’s ridiculously anticipated STRANGER THINGS was indeed shot, and will be be presented in, 4K UltraHD. With the heightened consumer adoption of 4k televisions over the last year, there’s still a noticeable void in terms of 4k content. Netflix is without a doubt a trend-setter in the industry, so it’s nice to see them set an example with their more recent seasons and series.

Season one of STRANGER THINGS is getting an 8 episode run which kicks off on July 15th exclusively on Netflix. And who knows, maybe we can get HDR support on season two…

For those unfamiliar, STRANGER THINGS takes place in 1983 in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The story follows the mysterious disappearance of a twelve-year-old boy and the strange happenings in a small Midwestern town. As you might expect from the 1983 setting, there’s plenty of 80s nostalgia to go around. Here’s what co-writer Matt Duffer had to say about it:

“We have so much nostalgia and love for this era. We really wanted to see something on television that was in the vein of the classic films we loved growing up: the Spielbergs, the John Carpenters, as well as the novels of Stephen King. And to us, what makes all of these stories so great to us — and so resonant — is that they all explore that magical point where the ordinary meets the extraordinary. When we were growing up, we were just regular kids, living in the suburbs of North Carolina, playing Dungeons and Dragons with our nerdy friends. But when we watched these films and read these books, we felt transported. Suddenly our lives had the potential for adventure — maybe tomorrow we would find a treasure map in the attic, maybe my brother would vanish into the TV screen. We really want to capture that feeling with Stranger Things. We want to bring that feeling to people who grew up on those films — and we also want to bring it to a whole new generation.”

We’re beyond excited here at MH, and you should be too. If you aren’t there just yet, do yourself a favor and check out the introductory trailer and still images below:

A love letter to the ’80s classics that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is set in 1983 Indiana, where a young boy vanishes into thin air.
