What a strange and winding road it has been for AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING. The first trailer that was shared with the public was met with cautious optimism, but then the film was shelved in order to spend some additional time in the editing room. That alone was a red flag, but over the last several months the film seemed to be getting back on the right track–or at least, some sort of track. A release date of 4/1 was given, and then not one, but two posters were disseminated to the media. Both of these posters were met with mostly negative feedback. To make matters worse, the film was given a PG-13 rating to accompany the teeny, social media-driven vibe of the promotional material. Word of mouth was at an all time low for the latest “big” entry into the Amityville franchise. What would it all mean?

Late last night Dread Central claims to have gotten word (from an extremely reliable source) that Dimension Films has shelved the project once again, and I’m not sure I can blame them if the report is true. There was practically zero interest from casual fans and borderline disdain from hardcore horror lovers. However, this could mean that a 3rd shot for the old Amityville house is extremely unlikely, at least from a theatrical stand point. There’s always a chance that we’ll see the film released straight to home video and VOD services down the road. And If that’s the case, I would strongly encourage them to roll out the original R-Rated version. . . and hire some new graphic artists.

For now, AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING is officially off of the market. We’ll keep you posted if any additional information comes our way. A formal announcement is expected to be made at some point this week.
