For some reason or another it appears to be incredibly difficult to make a quality Bigfoot movie. A few films have gotten close, but they all ultimately end up showing us far too little — or far too much. It’s a fascinating struggle, because I can’t think of many things that I find more terrifying than a big scary ape-man stalking me through the woods. That’s solid subject matter. Nevertheless, striking that perfect balance between imagination and reality is often difficult, but Dan Riesser’s Stomping Grounds just might have it figured out.

The film appears to straddle the line between character drama and horror/thriller. And while that combination can (and has) gone awry in the past — I have a good feeling about this one. I will admit two thing up front though: The filmmakers shouldn’t have shown us Bigfoot in the trailer, that should be a reveal (especially since it looks fucking awesome), and they should have spent a lot more time on a better title. But hey, a quality flick can easily wash away those two minor gripes.

Check out the poster and trailer below, but be warned — you might be better off going into this one blind if you want maximum impact. We’ll have a full review for you in the coming days.

Stomping Ground is the story of Ben and Annie, a young couple on a weekend trip to Annie’s small North Carolina hometown. At the local bar they run into Paul, a charming old friend of Annie’s, and Ben learns something he never knew about his girlfriend: She believes in Bigfoot. In fact, she and her friends used to “hunt” for the creature when they were kids. Before Ben knows it, he’s off on an impromptu Squatchin’ trip deep in the Carolina backwoods. Amidst the Squatch calls, campfire stories and beers, Ben quickly realizes that Paul may have an ulterior motive in bringing Annie to the woods. And something else out here seems to be after her as well. Everyone but Ben thinks its Bigfoot. But it can’t be, can it? After all, Bigfoot isn’t real.
