Louis is stuck in his mediocre copy store job. In order to spice his life up, Louis is determined to fill an empty cast position for the hit ghost hunting tv show, “Ghost Getters”. On the brink of giving up, he encounters a man making copies of a “do not enter” sign to keep kids and teenagers off his spooky off-road property. Seeing this as his opportunity, he gathers his crew which consist of a grad school reject, suicidal friend, a mall cop, after hour TV psychic, and next-door makeup artist to take on a ghost haunting adventure. Are they ready for what’s lurking behind the walls of this haunted house, or is it more than they bargained for? Ghost Team is a joyous movie that takes you through a fun and adventurous journey.

This is only the second movie done by writer/director Oliver Irving, but it sure doesn’t seem like it. I can’t exactly say the directing or cinematography is mind blowing, but it’s definitely decent. The scenery and mood is lighthearted at the start, and then a few horror-esque scenes are added to set up a more horror-appropriate atmosphere.

… Ghost Team is one of those films that makes horror/comedy work.

Horror and comedy are not exactly two genres that go hand in hand. So executing a movie that has a well kept balance can be challenging. Through the use of cliches found in paranormal horror movies, with a touch of humorous flare, Ghost Team is one of those films that makes horror/comedy work. The story is not a complex one, but the simplicity is much appreciated. From a comedy perspective, the story line is fun, relatable, and dare I say cute. It’s not exactly laugh-your-ass-off funny, but there are chuckle-worthy parts. The film also works from a horror standpoint. There are scenes that spook you out better than some actual genre films.

Despite it’s fun storyline and actual funny moments, the characters are this film’s most valuable asset. Throughout the story, they go the extra mile to tell us what makes each character weird and unique. The casting was executed perfectly and the actors all did a fantastic job at bringing their characters to life. The acting feels organic and the chemistry between the actors is great. Despite everyone doing a fantastic job, Justin Long as Ross the mall cop killed it!

While nothing is over the top amazing, I don’t really have anything bad to say about this film. Sure, it could have been funnier and maybe scarier, but it does a good job at keeping a balance. The characters are likeable, the acting is acceptable, and the writing is fairly good. Most importantly the storyline is consistent, avoids plot holes, and the ending doesn’t disappoint. So if you’re in the mood for something lighthearted and fun, then I recommend adding this one to your list.

Ghost Team opens in theaters August 12th.
