There’s something inherently enjoyable about a horror film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is usually why horror comedies are so popular.  Even better is a horror film that doesn’t take itself too seriously and has great visual effects.  Visual effects artist Torey Haas (V/H/S Viral, Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie) seems to nail that balance with his directorial debut in The Neon Dead.

While the premise (in which unwitting humans must contend with an army of monsters) seems familiar, Haas has constructed an alluring visual concept with a lighthearted approach.  The neon glow and creature designs are alluring, and the humorous tone invokes the nostalgia of the ’80s while still feeling modern. It’s a concept that doesn’t seem like it would work on paper, but boy does the trailer look like a lot of fun.  Check it out below.

The Neon Dead stars Marie Barker, Mark Ashworth (Cell, “Sleepy Hollow”), Greg Garrison, Dylan Schettina, Nathan DeRussy and Candace Mabry (Restoration).

Wild Eye Releasing will be lighting up The Neon Dead on DVD and Digital HD nationwide on September 13, 2016. The DVD release will exclusively include a feature-length commentary with director Torey Haas, bonus scenes, two monster shorts (First Date, Troll Picnic) by director Torey Haas and a creature profile.

An unemployed college graduate hires two paranormal exterminators to combat a monster infestation in her new home. But their prodding into an evil out of their depth unleashes an ancient demon. He and his army of monsters quickly overrun the home, intent on possessing every human they make contact with.
