Nope “The deeper you go, the scarier it becomes” isn’t a euphemism for some drunken college experience. It’s a tagline for Netflix’s new movie THE RITUAL set to hit the streaming service February 9. The movie hit select theaters last year.

The movie centers around a group of college friends who reunite for a camping trip but encounter a menacing present in the woods after one friend is injured and they decide to cut the hike short by cutting through a forest.

THE RITUAL isn’t rewriting the rules on what happens to hikers in strange woods. The new trailer from Netflix looks seriously intense, with plenty of violence and disturbing images—at least in the trailer. Love Netflix or hate it, they’re certainly open to genre films, and we have to salute them for that.

David Bruckner, whose FRIDAY THE 13TH film was canceled weeks before production started, is directing THE RITUAL. Bruckner is directing a screenplay by Joe Barton, which is based on the novel by Adam Nevill. THE RITUAL stars Rafe Spall (THE BIG SHORT, LIFE OF PI, HOT FUZZ), Robert James-Collier (DOWNTOWN ABBEY), ARSHER ALI (FOUR LIONS, THE MISSING) and Sam Troughton (AVP: ALIEN VS. PREDATOR, ROBIN HOOD).
