Production started yesterday in Vancouver, Canada on Freeform’s throwback slasher series, Dead of Summer. A slasher TV series set to air on a channel formerly known as ABC Family sounds geared more toward the teen demographic, but in an interesting twist a horror heavyweight recently announced their casting via twitter:

That’s right. The Candyman himself, actor Tony Todd, will be joining the 1980s set summer camp slasher serial.  We can expect him to lend his trademark ominous presence to the show, but not much else is known about his role just yet.

Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Stillwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses – and first kills. Stillwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn.

The series stars Elizabeth Mitchell, Elizabeth Lail, Zelda Williams, Mark Indelicato, Alberto Frezza , Eli Goree, Ronen Rubinstein, Amber Coney and Paulina Singer. Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis and Ian Goldberg write and executive-produce the series. Steve Pearlman serves as executive producer. Horowitz will direct the first episode.
