Universal Acquires More Monsters for Reboot Series
Between Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Johnny Depp, Universal hasn’t been shy about acquiring A-list talent for their series of classic monster reboots. Fresh off of the London set photos showing off Sofia Boutella’s sexy Mummy for 2017’s upcoming The Mummy, this weekend via comingsoon.net, Variety is now reporting that Javier Bardem is in talks to play Frankenstein’s monster for a classic Frankenstein reboot. Considering that Bride of Frankenstein is being tapped for a reboot, Bardem’s character would appear in multiple movies.
Of course, it could fall through. This is the second role Universal has offered Bardem, after all. The first role, Dr. Jekyll, went to Russell Crowe after Javier Bardem turned it down. Either way, we can expect a mega-watt star to step into The Monster’s massive shoes.
Between the star studded casting choices, and the interesting costume choices for the new Mummy, below, the Universal classic reboot series seems to be attempting to follow Marvel’s highly successful franchise formula. The real question, however, is: Will we get a horror worthy franchise or fang-less super heroes?
With all of these projects in the works, Universal has set the release for The Mummy for June 9, 2017. Two more yet-to-be-announced titles are scheduled for release on April 13, 2018 and February 15, 2019.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
