A throwback horror film with a commitment to practical effects and a story based on retro horror VHS board games is enough to make any horror film an instant “must watch.”  Of course, with low budget indie films, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the film will successfully nail its concept.  As Jackson Stewart’s first feature film debut made its way through the film festival circuit, though, positive word of mouth continued to build.  Even our review from the Knoxville Horror Film Festival gave the film a killer rating, and stated, “Beyond the Gates is made up of everything that horror fans adore…”  Yes, please.  Can this movie be released already?

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel; this “Jumanji for adults” retro horror film is just a month away from release, and we have a trailer to tide us over.  The trailer sets up just enough of the plot to whet our appetites without giving anything away and presents a beautiful visual aesthetic to boot.  Check it out, below.

Co-written and directed by Jackson Stewart, the film stars Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant, Barbara Crampton, and Matt Mercer.

Beyond the Gates is getting a limited theatrical and VOD release on December 9, 2016.

Two estranged brothers reunite at their missing father’s video store to liquidate the property and sell off his assets. As they dig through the store, they find a VCR board game dubbed ‘Beyond The Gates’ that holds a connection to their father’s disappearance and deadly consequences for anyone who plays it.
