15 modern indie horror movies to put on your radar
Theatrical horror has been in trouble for quite some time. And while certain films appear to be putting it back on track, an overwhelming majority of quality horror flicks are coming to us by way of independent filmmakers. This isn’t anything new, but it can prove challenging to navigate through this landmine-ridden space all on your own. So we’re here to help.
Here are 15 modern indie horror movies that you should absolutely put on your radar.
Plot Synopsis: A group of archaeologists uncover a strange structure in Northern Canada, dating over ten thousand years before the present. The team finds themselves isolated when their communication systems fail and it’s not long before they begin to feel the effects of the solitude.

Plot Synopsis: A night out turns deadly when three girls break into a seemingly empty mansion.

Plot Synopsis: When Ted’s beloved cat dies, the trauma triggers a terrible mental breakdown. His broken brain prompts him to bring his feline friend back – all he needs is nine human lives. Ted dons vicious deadly cat claw gloves and a creepy cat mask, and goes on a murderous rampage. As the butchery escalates, a twisted romance blossoms between Ted and Claire, a young woman who has also recently lost her cat in a horrifying incident.

Plot Synopsis: Novella McClure is like most struggling actresses in Los Angeles: she’s in her early 30s, her fake name sounded cooler ten years ago, and she hasn’t landed a role in three years. To top it all off, she’s developed a disturbing habit of eating her own flesh. Novella desperately tries to hide her strange condition from her motherly landlord, Eesha, and somewhat psychopathic best friend, Candice, but her body and mind continue to deteriorate in the depressing world of failed auditions and sketchy night clubs. Can a romantic relationship with her psychiatrist prevent her from self destruction? Or will her fatal habit continue to eat away at her?

Plot Synopsis: Since her childhood, Jessica has been haunted by recurrent nightmares whose meaning escapes her. This peculiarity has led her to study the psychophysiology of dreams and to follow a therapy with Sean, her mentor and boyfriend, to try and understand the origin of her nightmares. Following the death of her maternal grandmother she hardly knew, Jessica reluctantly returns to the family home. Jessica then begins to wander in a nightmarish world inhabited by twisted versions of her family members. She gradually improves her skills as a lucid dreamer and investigates to solve the mystery that gnaws her and haunts the family home…

Plot Synopsis: A psychological horror about a young woman coping with an unwanted pregnancy after moving into a seemingly haunted house.

Plot Synopsis: After an American tourist steps on a landmine, he is forced to watch his girlfriend get assaulted.

Nice. I really enjoyed all of these in one way or another. I’m always willing to put something cool on MY radar though. Thanks for the tip!

Alien Raiders came out years ago. I’ve seen it. How many of these are already available? I’m especially interested in Horsehead and the Bunny one.
April 1, 2016
Yeah Raiders was 2008 I believe. Still fits in the “Modern” bubble I’d say. And I never see it get the love it deserves… so here it is ?
These are mostly all available. Horsehead is definitely available now worldwide. Bunny is available on BR/DVD now and has VOD release May 16th.
You Are Not Alone and Last Girl Standing don’t have US distro yet but are available in the UK. Funhouse Massacre is out in June, and Cat Sick Blues has no distro at all just yet.
Regardless – I’ve certainly seen and “vetted” all of them. Reviews are all available right here on MH!

Meh…. Best two underground horror movies I have seen years both came out before I were born. They are Society and Possession with Sam Neill

Love this list. Haven’t heard of any of them, but I added a bunch of them to my NF queue (when possible).

Thanks, Dan! Come back through and let us know what you think of them.

Really enjoyed Funhouse Massacre, from start to finish!

Man I hated ‘Eat’ lol. Can’t help but make comparisons to ‘Trouble Every Day’ & ‘In My Skin’ which are far superior. Not really all that fair to compare but it’s true. Been waiting to see ‘Black Mountain Side’ for a while now, this was a nice reminder to check that one out.

Ha! Eat is definitely a goofy flick, but it’s also super gross. Doesn’t take itself quite as seriously as Trouble Everyday or In My Skin. Fair comparisons nonetheless.
BMS is a very different kind of film, which is refreshing.

The Possession of Michael King is one of my all time favorite movies.

It’s definitely in my top 3 found footage flicks I’d say. Absolutely deserves to be seen by more people!

Cool. Will look into some of these. ☺

Have seen most of this list & You are not alone was definitely the scariest Do not watch it at home alone! The beginning is a bit slow just setting the scene for the rest but the 2nd half whew! I was terrified!
December 13, 2016
This is the best list I’ve seen. I haven’t heard any of these. I finished watching Eat and it was really twisted. I was getting tired of searching for horror movies just to see nothing but mainstream horror movies. This is by far the best list! Thank you!

Proxy was terrific. Just saw Landmine Goes Click, which was not, sadly.
December 9, 2017
I’ve been lucky enough to catch a few of these now (and wouldn’t have known about them if not for this site). Here’s real-quick thoughts of them:
Black Mountain Side – underwhelming ripoff of The Thing. Could have been much better.
Body – terrible, with dumb characters in a dumb situation that hardly develops at all.
Horsehead – genuinely weird and creepy; definitely worth a look-see.
Landmine Goes Click – tense for about the first half hour, and then it just falls apart.
Proxy – terrific thriller; plenty of surprises.
The Funhouse Massacre – well-done gore and more. A fine slasher pic.
Alien Raiders – felt kind of underdeveloped, maybe even pointless.
