THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was a genre-defining film when it theaters nearly two decades ago. It defined the found-footage subgenre for years to come—better or worse. There’s been two sequels, neither living up to the original. Now, however, the franchise could be heading to a TV near you, according to the original film’s co-director Eduardo Sanchez.

Sanchez said on the Diminishing Returns Podcast, “For us, it’s a very natural thing to go and say, “Hey, let’s do a frickin’ Blair Witch show.” You can say it’s from the original creators and we can bring in a whole bunch of interesting directors to direct episodes.”

This sounds like an interesting premise, especially the idea of bringing in a slew of different directors to direct episodes. It seems like Sanchez has had this idea for some time.

Sanchez also said on the podcast, “Well, you know, I can’t really discuss. I think that the idea of a Blair Witch anthology has always been very – just a really interesting thing… I think it might be one of those things that might be – you know – the more you think about it, you’re like, “That might be the perfect… a TV show.” You know? So, we’ll see what happens, but I think that’s the next big thing for Blair Witch. Probably TV.”

The traditional TV model has been upended thanks to various streaming services. Binge watching and anthologies are dominant, and such a format for a BLAIR WITCH TV show could make for some very compelling television. We just hope whatever comes next for the franchise captures the original horror of the very first film.
