Remember a time when survival horror gaming was almost exclusively tied to the popular Resident Evil franchise? Or, in 2002, when the series was reinvigorated with a breathtaking graphic overhaul on the Nintendo GameCube?  The developers immediately pounced on the success by churning out a prequel, where fans finally pieced together what happened to the Bravo team before plucky heroes Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine entered the scene.

Though it wasn’t until Resident Evil 4 that the series finally revamped everything, the prequel tweaked the game play toward the right direction while retaining the same familiarity in the series fans were accustomed to.  The playable characters, Bravo team medic Rebecca Chambers and convict Billy Coen, felt a bit more relatable as their forced partnership in survival meant actual character development for both. Story aside, the characters were used in innovative ways that played to their strengths and marked the first time the player could switch between the two characters during game play, usually to solve puzzles. The prequel also made the limitations of the inventory system even more difficult with the loss of the storage boxes, and often the player was forced to drop precious ammo in order to pick up key items.  Which meant a lot of backtracking to retrieve that precious ammo later on.

While the core of Resident Evil 0 remains the same, flaws and all, this new version boasts a stunning HD makeover, 5.1 surround sound, widescreen support, and more modern controls for those who never were able to get into the series (or were too young). Perhaps most enticing of all is the “Wesker Mode” that’s unlocked once the game has been completed, which gives Rebecca a goth makeover with red eyes or changes Billy into series villain Albert Wesker alltogether. It’s not all for show either- Wesker mode gives the character the ability to dash about and take out three attackers at once with laser eyes.

For those in need of a healthy dose of nostalgia, or those who never submersed themselves in the series, Resident Evil 0 HD is available today on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
