Operation Overlord was the name given to the Battle of Normandy during WWII. A nighttime paratrooper assault preceded the daytime beach invasion. During the nighttime drop, many of the paratroopers failed to land in their designated drop zones and were scattered all over the French countryside. OVERLORD the movie follows a rag-tag group of America paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines during Operation Overlord who discover some unsavory Nazi military operation in a small village.

Rumors about OVERLORD being a new entry in the Cloverfield Universe aren’t new, but JJ Abrams is on record saying OVERLORD isn’t an entry in the CLOVERFIELD franchise. Whether that’s a misdirection or a bit of honesty is still unknown. Abrams has a history of casting misdirections, but considering the poor reception of THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX, which hamfisted a connection to the CLOVERFIELD and 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE  into the plot, a reassessment of the franchise feels right.

OVERLORD follows the paratroopers as they discover some nefarious Nazi activity that appears to be turning people into raging zombies of some sort. The trailer looks both action-packed, violent, and suspenseful, as the cast of characters must fight Nazis and the supernatural forces they’ve unleashed, which appears to be a 1,000-year-old army of some sort.

Julius Avery (SON OF A GUN, JERRYCAN) directs a screenplay written by Billy Ray (SHATTERED GLASS, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, THE HUNGER GAMES) and Mark L. Smith (THE REVENANT, VACANCY). OVERLORD stars Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbæk, Iain De Caestecker, Jacob Anderson, Hélène Cardona, John Magaro, Jovan Adepo, and Éva Magyar.

OVERLORD hits theaters Nov. 9. Check out the trailer below.

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
