Coming to Shudder in April, The Banishing is the latest film from director Chris Smith (Triangle, Creep). After watching the chilling new trailer, it looks like we’ll be getting a beautiful period piece about a young reverend and his family who move into a very haunted house—the most haunted house in England, according to the synopsis.

The Banishing, we’re told, is based on a true story and if you have ever wondered who actually believes that when a movie says it…it’s me. I know writers take incredible liberties with these things, but I am here to suspend my disbelief! This story seems to have it all—a haunted house, a kid being creepy, deeply religious folks, and even an occultist who we aren’t sure we can trust. It also has a very talented cast which includes Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible franchise), John Lynch (The Secret Garden, Black Death), and John Heffernan (Eye in the Sky).

The Banishing will stream exclusively to Shudder on April 15th in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as via the Shudder offering within the AMC+ bundle where available.

The Banishing tells the true story of the most haunted house in England. A young reverend and his wife and daughter move into a manor with a horrifying secret. When a vengeful spirit haunts the little girl and threatens to tear the family apart, the reverend and his wife are forced to confront their beliefs. They must turn to black magic by seeking the help of a famous occultist…or risk losing their daughter.
