Issa López’s award-winning film comes to Shudder’s streaming service this Thursday. Tigers Are Not Afraid follows orphaned children armed with wishes and running from both ghosts and the cartel. She combines a gritty urban setting amidst Mexico’s drug wars with a sense of magical realism to conjure a unique, beautiful experience.

universally considered a horror gem

Tigers is praised not only by the likes of Stephen King, Guillermo del Toro, and Neil Gaiman, but also by Modern Horrors alum Megan Navarro. “Sometimes terrifying, sometimes lighthearted, and mostly devastating to the core,” her review from 2017’s Fantastic Fest was among the first to recognize what is now virtually universally considered a horror gem. In total, it’s collected more than fifty awards, and del Toro already tapped López to direct an upcoming feature film.

Tigers Are Not Afraid begins streaming on Shudder Thursday, September 12, 2019.
