After a successful 2019 festival run, including a world premiere at Buffalo Dreams, Nefarious will get an official release in early 2020 thanks to a deal with Gravitas Ventures (Corbin Nash, 13 Cameras). We reviewed Richard Rowntree’s sophomore feature favorably, ahead of several awards at Buffalo Dreams, including Outstanding International Feature, Outstanding Production Design, and Outstanding Special Effects. A trip to the Austin Revolution Film Festival resulted in both Festival and Audience awards for Best International Feature, and a Best Actor festival award for lead Buck Braithwaite.
The vicious and visceral home invasion horror/thriller focuses on a robbery gone bad, complete with a villainous performance from Toby Wynn-Davies (Escape From Cannibal Farm). Nadia Lamin (Hosts) also appears poised for a breakout. Richard Rowntree directed, from a script he co-wrote with Matthew Davies, whom he also collaborated with on Dogged (review). With a heavy emphasis on social commentary, particularly relating to economic disparity in the western world, Nefarious nevertheless maintains focus on story with a clever script.
Although details are limited, expect a VOD release on March 17, 2020 while we keep our fingers crossed for a Blu-ray. Check out the amazing poster from the ever-talented Chris Barnes, as well as the trailer, below. For more information, also check out our review, and coverage of Rowntree’s first film, Dogged (both linked above). We also interviewed Rowntree for the Modern Horrors Podcast earlier this summer.
Darren, Lou, Jo and Mas live a meagre existence on the fringes of poverty. Indebted to the criminal kingpin of their social housing development, they routinely fear for their lives. On the other side of town, the already wealthy Marcus and his handicapped brother Clive receive a windfall in the form of a winning lottery ticket. When their worlds collide following a botched robbery, the would-be criminals get more than they bargained for, and will be tested to their limits in a desperate attempt to survive a predator of monstrous proportions.
