We don’t get to hear from many Iranian storytellers in the U.S. and horror has never been key to Iran’s cinematic culture, so the trailer for first time director Kourosh Ahari’s The Night presents us with a rare treat! Although a portion of the trailer is in English, the film is largely in Farsi with English subtitles. This will also be the first U.S. produced film to receive distribution in Iran in four decades. All of that is great and everything, but the best part is that the movie looks fantastic!
Right away you can feel the tense atmosphere as Babak (Shabab Hossein) and Neda (Niousha Jafarian), along with their baby, check into a deserted hotel at night. Comparisons to The Shining’s Overlook Hotel will be impossible to avoid, but this one looks to pack-in more than enough personality to stand on its own. Furthermore, it looks like this couple has some secrets to work through and they’ll be doing it on a night that doesn’t seem to end in a hotel that won’t let them leave. Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think!
The Night will be available in select theaters, digital and VOD January 29, 2021
