Writer/Director Julia Ducournau knocked critics and film festival attendees off their asses with her impressive feature debut earlier this year about a coming of age cannibal tale (alternatively titled Grave).  Her feature even made headlines at when it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, reportedly having caused a couple of people to pass out during a screening of the film, if social media was to be believed.  Ignore this.  Social media never blows anything out of proportion, right? Ha.  Why am I bothering to touch on this? Because this film isn’t the over the top gross out fest those news reports would have you believe, and I’d like to spare you from the false expectations if possible.

What the film is, however, is a fantastic coming of age story that’s both vicious and darkly comedic. Think of a French version of Ginger Snaps, but trade the werewolves for cannibals.  Actually, even better?  Read our review from TIFF, which eloquently puts in to words just how great this film is while adjusting your expectations accordingly.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, mark your calendars: Focus World has announced a theatrical release for Raw. It will open in select cities on March 10, 2017 before releasing on digital platforms in the summer.  Raw isn’t your typical entry in the cannibal sub-genre, but boy is it good.

Garance Marillier portrays the teenaged Justine, who commences her studies at veterinary school to follow in her family members’ footsteps. Raised as a vegetarian, Justine is pressured at school to try meat for the first time. Once she does, she plumbs both the depths of her own soul and tests the limits of her darkest cravings.
